CHECK OUT THE AFRICAN BUFFALO! JUST ONE OF AFRICAS BIG FIVE WILD ANIMALS

BUFFALO “Flanks of Ebony, Horns of Steel” Are you enjoying yourselves so far learning about and seeing our amazing wildlife game: Africa’s “Big Five”? There goes our guide, Elia, on his colorful orange motorcycle again just like the “Knight Rider”. He weaves and goes through the bright moonlight of the night finding us the next animal of Africa’s mighty “Big Five”, the buffalo.”

“A large herd of buffalo is an amazing sight. They are widespread, common and plentiful. The buffalo is related to the domestic cow and is one of the most important mammals on the African continent. Their shoulder heights can be between 3.3 to 5.6 feet and their head-and-body length can range 6 to 12 feet. Buffalos can weigh between 1,100 to 2,000 pounds. They are very muscular and mainly hunted by the lions. The front hooves of the buffalo are bigger than their back hooves so that they can balance their heavy bodies and support their weight evenly. The buffaloes that live in the savannah have black or brown coats and the horns of the bigger male African buffaloes have a continued bone structure called a “boss”. They wander long distances in large groups, eating grass as they move along. They also need surface water to survive in the savannah. The herd is led by the females while the males protect them from lions and predators. Just like a father protects his family from danger. The birds like to sit on their backs and pick on the ticks.”

“Look at that body, built so firm and strong with muscles, roaming in the hustle and bustle of the bush veld. Now come along and look at those curled up horns worn on the head that are also taken to bed. It must be a heavy weight to carry as he hurries to escape a stranger in the distance. Heads raised, horns glinting, massive fringed ears and nose twitching in search of danger, he fights on. He is brave and oh so bold!”
